How to Stream Media to a PS3 using PS3 Media Server

The combination of the abilities of the PlayStaion 3 and the PS3 Media Server give you an excellent platform for accessing and playing virtually any type of multimedia content.

Prerequisites for streaming media to a PS3 using PS3 Media Server

Streaming Video to the PS3 using PS3 Media Server

To streaming Video from the PS3 Media server to your PlayStation 3, scroll across to Video on your XrossMediaBar (XMB) and then scroll down to select the PS3 Media Server.

Select the X button to access this content.

Depending on how you have configured your media content folders, you can now drill down to your Video content using the X button

Select your required movie and press the X button to continue.

You can now play the film by pressing the X button. Note in the example above that the DVD box cover is displayed. This will only occur if you have the cover image saved as folder.jpg in the same directory as the movie. If you don't the image saved, it will render a screenshot of the movie at your predefined point.

The movie above is also in a format that is natively playable by the PlayStation 3. If the PS3 Media Server recognises that the format cannot be played natively, it will put [MEncoder] at the end of the film name (unless you have changed your preference). If you do not wish to use MEncoder as your option to rencode your movie, you can select the #-- TRANSCODE --# menu and choose one of the other predefined options.

Instead of browsing to your video content using the folder structure they are stored in on the Media Server, you can also browse using the #-Media Library-#. This can be found directly under the PS3 Media Server Menu item as shown at the beginning of Step 1.

By selecting the #-Media Library -# menu, and then Video on the next sub menu, you will then be presented with your further browsing options.

Browsing By Date will split the files up into the year the films were ripped or saved to disk and not the year they were created.

You are also given the more standard options of All Videos, HD and SD Videos and well as DVD images(iso).

 

 

 

Selecting one of these items will now show a list of all the movies in that category with its screenshot as shown below (except for DVD Images).

Accessing Music Content using PSĀ£ Media Server on the PS3

To access your audio content, from the XMB, browse to the Music Menu and then select PS3 Media Server.

Select the X button to access this content.

Browse to the folder added which contains your Music Content and the press the X button.

Depending on the way you have stored you music content, your music files or folders will be displayed. Press the X button to access the folders or play your files.

If your music is stored per album, the Album Art will show when your browse into that particular folder. You can also see that the music codec listed above is not supported by the PS3 by default so will be transcoded first.

As with Video, you can browse through you Music collection using the #-Media Library-# option from the PS3 Media Server Menu

As can be seen above, this gives a wide variety of options for accessing the music content on your PS3 Media Server.

To access your Photos, scroll to across to Photos on the XMB and then scroll down to PS3 Media Server.

Press the X button to access your Photos.

Select the Photos/Pictures folder that you configured and press the X button on your controller. Depending on the way your have added your images, you can now access them directory or drill down further into your folder structure.

Another option for accessing your photo content is to browse through the #-Media Library-# from the PS3 Media Server sub menu as shown above.

As can be shown above, you have a few options but nothing quite so extensive as the Music Media Library option.
